Movie Review: The LEGO Movie

The LEGO Movie came out this weekend and it is great!  This movie can be appreciated by adults and kids alike.

The movie is funny, full of adventure and nostalgia. It pulls all the LEGO sets in a cute story line where an ordinary construction worker is accidentally mistaken as ‘The Special’ who is prophesied to defeat President Business and his evil plot.

The voice cast for this movie was impeccable. Stars such as Morgan Freeman, Will Ferrell, Jonah Hill, Charlie Day, Will Arnett, Liam Neeson, and Elizabeth Banks bring all the characters to life.  (I’m sure after seeing the film everyone will have their favorite character.  Mine was Batman)

This film stays very true to the LEGO brand as well.  The characters move and look just like the figures.  And if you have ever played the video games, some of the building scenes remind me of the game play.

Overall it was tons of fun to watch and well made. I highly recommend anyone see it.

Sex, Girls and Bridget Jones….This is my Life

Well it’s been a while since I have written anything here.  The New Year has come and gone and I sit and contemplate what has been going on.  I feel like my life is a mix of Girls, Sex and the City and Bridget Jones’s Diary.  Basically, I’m in my early 30’s, single, working on a career and still enjoy bar hoping.

I wanted to talk about dating again.  I don’t know how people do it.  I’ve gone on dates and chit chatted with a few guys but nothing really seemed to click.  Finally, I felt I might have someone.  Maybe I sabotaged myself but it always seems like feelings are so flaky.  One day you are chit chatting, the next day your phone seems dead.  I would like to know what happened within those few days/hours when you just know things are through.  Was it a chance encounter with someone else, maybe an ex that changed their mind?  Did they realize you’re a bat-shit crazy person; oh my god what are they doing with you? Or was it just a quick rump in the sack and they are good until they hook up with a more complete package of what a “girlfriend” should be? I don’t know…

Either way, it makes me gloomy sometimes. The sensation of a new person in your life is always nice.  Those brief moments of giddiness when you first start dating is always fun.  But then it slowly unravels.  Can it stop doing that!?  Anyways, I continue that paved road alone.  I will keep improving my shy self and see what happens.

One note though, for those people who maybe even more naive than me.  If a person is not around as much as you like, and if you are usually hanging with your friends by yourself….yeah that not a relationship!  Don’t kid yourself.  A relationship via text msg is not a real relationship!  Also, if that person just doesn’t seem over their ex as much as they keep saying they are…yeah…they are not gonna get into a real relationship with you.  Just pointing out the obvious.  (I know…pot calling the kettle black and such).

In other news, I’ll be moving soon.  I’m excited about that.  I know I’ve been yapping and complaining about this to everyone, sorry.  I’ve been pretty scared of possibly losing my job due to downsizing and am happy I will be lowering my monthly rent.  Unfortunately, I will have a roommate but hopefully it won’t be so bad.  My first and current apartment has been a lot of fun to live in and a learning experience as well.  I’m not a big fan of my neighbors or of the property mgmt. So I’ll be glad to ditch this place.  One day I will surely buy a house.  In the mean time I hope to save some money (fingers crossed).

On a lighter note, I’ve been watching Community and it is such a wacky fun show.  I would recommend anyone to watch it.  Also, I’ve been reading and watching lots of anime/manga lately but I will save that for a later posting.  Also, got to see Wolf of Wall Street and Frozen.  Both were good for what they were. Check them out!

I already feel better having written some things down.  Thanks for reading!

Oh no the year is wrapping up! 2013 Review

Tomorrow will be New Years eve which means I’m due for some yearly reflection.
This year has been pretty good to me. I have been living on my own for a bit over a year and had a ton of fun being a slob and doing almost whatever I feel like it. Living alone does have its down falls though.  There is the mild loneliness you get every once in a while and your constantly broke cause your paying everything on your own.  Speaking of which why the fudge is living in Miami so  expensive? Do you need to be a doctor and/or work 60 hours per week to be independent?  That’s just ridiculous.  The wages for most people cannot support one person let alone someone with an actual kid. I don’t know how people get by.
Anyways,  this year I actually got to leave Miami for a bit. I went to St.Pete and got to check out the Dali museum.  The museum was pretty small but I was surprised at how much I liked the pieces.  Some of them took up an entire wall.  Unfortunately,  I was sick the whole trip but it was still enjoyable in between feeling like I was going to die.
And since we are getting older two of my friends got married.  One of the weddings was beautiful and was held in Tampa.  What a nice city.  It had a slight small town feel. If I could find work there maybe I would think about moving there.

If you read my blog you may have also learned I entered my first art show and it went well. Hopefully I will have more to me in the future to work on projects.
And lastly and sorted related my brother is back home and I got a new car. As usual I have bad timing. The new Corolla model came out right after I bought my Corolla. And speaking of more bad luck  someone backed into my car a month after I got it. I didn’t even have my new tag yet! “I can believable”…
And what about resolutions for next year? Well, I think they will be the same as last year: lose weight, save money, get a better job and try to have fun while I can.  What about you?

Movie Review: Documentary: Hot Coffee

I meant to write this earlier, but I’m always a slacker when it comes to blogging.  I recently watched Hot Coffee.  I love documentaries, and I especially like documentaries that are well done.  This one completely changed my view on some of the suits you may have heard about. Although it came out in 2011, it is still very relevant.

It starts off by examining the McDonald’s hot coffee suit but goes even deeper to discuss how corporations and their lobbyist have managed to manipulate the legal system to their benefit.  This doesn’t necessarily mean frivolous lawsuits do not exist (I can attest to this with my years of experience in customer service), but sometimes there is more to a story than the media portrays.
This leads the film to discuss caps on punitive damage.  This may seem like a good idea, but the film explores the affect it may have on legitimate cases.
Another topic the film hits on is the popularity of arbitration and the common practice of including this agreement in the fine print of many contracts such as your credit card or terms and conditions of anything you purchase now a days.  Just go to any web retailer and I’m sure you will see it in their terms and conditions. This process takes the dispute out of the court system and puts it in the hand of a third party which may not be completely fair to the claimant.
Whether you agree with the film or not, I believe the subject matter is fascinating.  The film does an excellent job of discussing the relevant issues and providing persuasive arguments with real life examples.  Check it out and leave comments!!!

Mysteries of the Unexplained

Last month I entered a piece of ‘art’ titled Boogie Men for a show at the Bird and Bear Gallery (located on the 2nd floor of Tate’s Comics).  The theme of the show was Mysteries of the Unexplained so I created a piece about the monsters that most kids think live under their beds or closets.  It was mostly card stock and added details with pen.

I wasn’t expecting much and I even missed the opening night artist reception because I had other obligations.  However, low and behold someone out there actually liked my piece and purchased it.  This was very surprising and I didn’t believe it for myself until I saw it in person with the word “sold” by it. It is a nice feeling and am very happy to have entered, let alone sell my piece.

I have to thank my friends who are always doing creative things and motivating me to try to work on my skills.  I will definitely try to participate in more shows and see what I can come up with 🙂

The ghosts on the top center is Emily’s work and the UFO in the center row is Chez’s
It’s my favorite co-host German, next to his ghostly woman.
Hector’s piece.  Looking pretty creepy here.

Something Nerdier Podcast: Episode 2 – Discussing Thor and Other Comic Movies

Hi everyone (all 8 of you)!  We recorded a brand new podcast!  Funny man Tony Roman joins the cast along with German Nino and our editor Erik Tejeiro.  The podcast was a ton of fun to make.  Enjoy the silliness and thanks for listening!

Don’t forget to see Tony Roman and others at Loko Molokos: Lets Hear some Yokes!!!  This Thursday at 9pm  – 3201 N Miami Ave Ste 104 Miami FL 33127

BTW, this is just a temporary spot to post the podcast.  SomethingNerdier.com will be up and running shortly!

Thor: The Dark World

Sexy man Thor is back for a third time.  This time he is battling Dark Elves who are trying to engulf the world into darkness.  He is reunited with Jane Foster and her gang under unfortunate circumstances when she accidentally becomes the host for the powerful weapon the Aether.  Thor must protect Asgard and Jane from Malekith  the leader of the Dark Elves, but at what costs?

Although I have a huge bias for Thor, I have to admit Loki steals the show in this movie.  His playful and snarky humor begs for more scenes next to the God of Thunder.  He is a complex character that seems to be teetering between good and evil at all times.

Besides the humor, drama, and cast, the movie looks great.  The graphics were well done, Asgard and the other realms look as believable as they can be for a super hero flick.  Let’s not forget all the action sequences and fighting that happens.

Overall the movie is very entertaining.  This movie definitely gets a “go see it!” recommendation.  It has everything you may want in a super hero movie.  Hunky super heroes, cool villains, action, drama, romance and humor.  Do you need anything else?  Go see it!

Zumba!!!

Hello again.  Just a random posting for today.  I wanted to post my favorite work out video.  It’s a Zumba class, so prepare to jump and dance and look funny.  However, if you do it alone it shouldn’t matter 🙂

A few reasons why I like this video:

– It has regular young ladies, not super fit, skinny models that know the routine by heart.

– They have cool accents! Yes, it seems like this video was made in England in Hull College.

– The music is pretty decent and fun to dance to.  I found it kinda hard to find a video that had decent music you wouldn’t mind working out to.

– The work outs are not too hard.  If you do the video a few times you actually start to get the hang of it.

–  And finally, since Zumba is a mix of Latin type dancing, it doesn’t seem like such a chore once you try it.

So anyways.  Try it out! Even if you don’t make it to the end of the video after 2 songs you will be sweating.

On an even nerdier IT note:  This video keeps disappearing from YouTube.  I finally got tired of that and decided to download it.  If you find this to be an annoying issue with other videos I highly recommend you visit: http://keep-tube.com/  I ended up downloading VDownloader as an add on to my laptop browser and it seems to work pretty well.

If you have any work out recommendations whether it’s a video, blog or site, leave a comment.  I <3 comments!

ABVD / Japan 2008-20012 by Ajani Oloye

So I got some new reading material from an old friend of mine, Ajani Oloye.  I didn’t even know he had published work until he recently posted on Facebook (I’m terrible!).  I think getting published is great and I commend anyone who puts effort into getting their work out there. I’m sure it’s not easy.  I also love to share the works of people I actually know, especially if I think it’s good.

I was really touched by ABVD.  It is a short comic book about his experience with being diagnosed with cancer. Although it is a quick read, it’s pretty moving.

I also ordered his book of sketches, which were full of great drawings of people out and about in public places while he was in Japan/NY.  I really liked some of the water color pieces he had included.

If you are curious and would like to see his work and/or order his books I would highly recommend you do!  You can find his order information on his website:  www.ajanioloye.com

Podcast: Episode 1 – Top 5 Comedies

Some time ago, me and my awesome friend/funnyman German decided to make a movie podcast  (visit his blog here) .  Well, I finally got around to editing it a bit, and uploading it.  It’s really long and not scripted but it can be fun to listen to.  My apologies for the constant use of the word ‘epic’ and giggling.  Have fun listening!
